The Hidden Danger
of Radon Gas
Radon is a harmful, naturally occurring radioactive gas that is completely invisible, odorless, and colorless. It seeps into homes from the soil and rocks beneath, finding its way inside through cracks, gaps around pipes, or any small openings in walls and floors, particularly in basements.
Once inside, radon breaks down into particles known as radon decay products (RDPs), which can become trapped in lung tissue. These particles continue to emit radiation, and the more often your cells are exposed, the greater the risk of lung damage. Over time, repeated exposure to high levels of radon can significantly increase the likelihood of developing lung cancer.
Testing for Radon
What you need to know
Radon levels can change rapidly and unpredictably, which is why the only reliable way to understand the radon levels in your home or business is through proper testing. While short-term tests may seem convenient, it's advised to base any decisions about addressing radon on the results of a long-term test, lasting at least three months or more. This provides a more accurate picture of radon levels over time. Radon guidelines vary by country, but the importance of maintaining safe levels is universal. In Canada, the current Health Canada guideline for radon is 200 Bq/m³. If your home or business exceeds this level, it is recommended to install a mitigation system to reduce the risks. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets the threshold at 148 Bq/m³. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises that radon levels should ideally not exceed 100 Bq/m³. Staying below these recommended levels is crucial to ensuring a healthier living and working environment.
Customized Radon Solutions
for Your Home
We carefully evaluate every aspect of your residential or commercial property to design a tailored system that effectively reduces radon levels. Depending on the specific needs of your property, there are two main types of radon mitigation systems we use: 1) Sub-slab depressurization (SSD), commonly installed under concrete slabs, and 2) Sub-membrane depressurization (SMD), ideal for buildings with crawl spaces. Both methods are highly effective and customized to suit your property's structure and layout. Using advanced testing and diagnostic tools, we ensure that your radon levels are brought to safe limits before we finish the job, giving you peace of mind from the moment we leave.
